Dear Readers:
Some of you have subscribed forever – since 1995 – and some of you have only recently found us. Some of you know what I have to say, though many do not: I have sad news to share.
Will Rowlands – my husband, best friend, and co-publisher – passed away at home with his family close by on June 12, 2026.
Will edited and produced this magazine since we took it over in 2010, and for the last six of those 16 years he did so while undergoing cancer treatments. He didn’t want his illness broadcast and, as difficult as it was to keep it quiet, I honored that request. When I tell you this publication meant a lot to him, consider this: when leaving the hospital a few days before he died, his doctors queried him on what he’d most like to be doing with his life going forward. Will’s reply was so very much in character – “I want to be at home so I can work on the magazine and do some pruning.”
I honor his incredible courage and bravery, his sense of humor and determination to keep publishing until the very end. He had actually done so much advance work on the July/August issue (which went to the printer three days before he passed) that son Graham and I were able to get it done on schedule with minimum stress. I have to tell you, though, my husband the editor was critiquing my calendar paragraph spacing from his hospital bed. I hope this issue measures up, Willie.
We published 78 issues together since buying Connecticut Gardener from its founder, Pamela Weil. I’m committed to publishing at least a few more issues (while looking for the perfect successor). I can’t predict the future, and I’m coming back from an unbelievably demanding journey as a caregiver, but at this writing I’m finding great solace in the process of making a magazine.
While pulling this issue together and finding myself a little short on material, I discovered a number of yet-to-be published pieces that Will had formatted. Was he anticipating my need for them? Having these little gifts is an incredible help, although running across them usually triggers tears.
Sending heartfelt thanks to those of you who sent such lovely comments, cards, and good wishes. You continue to astound me with your kindness.
Will made this magazine his life. Along with his longtime career as a soccer referee (over 1000 games!), Connecticut Gardener was a source of great pride and accomplishment for him during these last 16 years.
I dedicate this issue to Will, to our 57 years together, and to our journey through our final chapter together as publishers and soul mates.
– Anne Rowlands
